Ais on Fashion: Golden Globes Special!

18 Jan

I love Awards Season. So much so, I just CAPITALISED it.

As I mentioned on Twitter earlier, one of my major guilty pleasures is acceptance speeches. I LOVE them. I live vicariously through the Hollywood A-list, shampoo bottle in hand. I imagine who I’d thank and when and how I’d cue my ‘single-tear-drop-close-up’ to the camera man.

I love examining the balance between humour and humility – funnily enough, neither of those features appear too much in any speeches.

I love the emotional (fake or otherwise) reactions of the loved ones and fellow cast members of the winners. To attend an awards ceremony like the Globes or the Holy Grail – The Oscars – would be a dream. An emotional rollercoaster, but a dream.

One thing that I love almost as much as acceptance speeches is Awards Season fashion. Here’s my HUGELY critical and no-holds-barred review of this year’s Golden Globes.

Contents:

Wanna see Barbie’s Glee?

Green Eyed Monsters?

Nudey Ladies

Red Hot Mamas

Black is the new black

Pastels on the Block

Hot Mess

What the FROCK?! (worst of the night)

Ahhhhhhhh… Joy (best of the night)

Right, so the entire cast of Glee went to Barbie’s Big Pink Dress Shop In The Sky, picked up slightly varying shades of pink/nude/nudey pink and threw them on in the dark.

Naya Rivera and Dianna Agron are both hotties no matter what they wear, but my God could the Glee ladies do with some guidance and imagination…

And also, hey there Lea Michele and your nineteen million hours of pose training. You don’t look abnormal at all. I love those ridiculous angles you’re making. *ahem*

Green! Who knew it could be so flattering. Angie looks nice, but I think the dress could have a more interesting cut, it’s a little bit Granny (and Angie is the POLAR OPPOSITE of Granny – mine anyway).

Mila Kunis looks okaaay, I suppose, but it doesn’t set the world alight. And Catherine ZJ looks fab – she looks her age, the right earrings, the lack of accessories elsewhere as the dress is enough. The dress does kinda look like grass though…

OH WOW, how original! More nudes and pinks. Groundbreaking. I’m just gonna be honest, Leighton doesn’t do it for me, here or in general. But especially here.

Scarlett has the look of a woman scorned – she’s going through a divorce and her whole demeanor screams “F**k off and die, Men” and with her mousy brown hair and BLEH dress, she wasn’t trying to attract anything on Globes night.

As for Natalie. Now, we ALL KNOW how much I love NP. So this *might* be a little biased. But I think she looks great. The dress is a bit different, and it is a great shape for her & her bump. I love the whole thing and think it works well.

Red hot mamas, or what?! Christina Hendriks looks amazing, first time I’ve ever seen roaring red hair and a fire red dress go perfect together.

January Jones… Another of my Fave Females. But she’s had harsh criticism for this little number – some say it’s too booby. I say: She’s January Flippin’ Jones, she can WORK booby. And so well. Love it with the black platforms too.

Eva Longoria, another recent divorcee, looked effortlessly glam. Nothing too outrageous, but the shape of the dress was at least a little eye-catching. Fair play. Soz about your cheating rat hubby.

Jane Lynch (a VERY deserving winner on the night) went black too. Very elegant, not trying too hard. Great acceptance speech too, FYI. My favourite speech of the night.

Jayma Mays. Hmmm. I don’t love it, I don’t hate it. Sometimes indifference is a worse insult than hate…

Okay, Tilda Swinton. I loved Jill Sander’s Spring/Summer runway. WHY did you go and wreck the buzz by using a Colour Catcher on your gown and robbing all the colour?!

Claire Danes, you were my favourite last year so I was expecting big things. This is grand. It’s a bit plain. Nice colour, I suppose. Am I allowed say she looks TOO thin?

Emma Stone, I’m sooo disappointed in you for dying your GORGEOUS red hair, your most beautiful asset. I mean, you still look great, fab figure and got the block colour/pastels trend bang on, but your red hair would’ve been amazing with this.

Halle Berry. Two words – Mutton. Lamb.

Amy Adams seems to LOVE looking 56, despite only being 36. She did the same thing (and the same colour gown) at the Critics Choice Awards. She needs a new stylist. STAT.

Christina Aguilera, you’re talented. Very talented. You can sing like an angel. You can write beautiful lyrics. But LORD GOD IN HEAVEN do you miss the fashion mark by MILES, every single time.

Worst of the Night

J.Lo would look marginally better if she were to… maybe… change her… No. She’d only look better as an extra in the school dance scene in Grease. And what’s with the white eye mask she’s got goin’ on?

Sorry, em, WHAT is Mandy “I got passed security pretending to be Natalie Portman’s sister” Moore even DOING at the Globes? What was she IN?

Worst of the night/decade/eternity goes to: the daisy clad Michelle Williams. Be honest, you borrowed that from little Matilda, didn’t you? Or else you let her pick it? Unflattering shape. Unflattering colour.

Hark back to your mustard yellow Vera Wang days will ya? Remember, 2006, Oscars? Yeah. Go, now. Head into the light.

So now for my runners up for Best Dressed:

Got to hand it to Chris Colfer. Dude’s lookin’ FLY. He’s the most dapper man on the red carpet and therefore gets a special spot on the best dressed list.

I’m gonna be honest, I don’t know who Olivia Wilde is, but homegirl can rock a ballgown. To quote my fave fashion movie: “Give me a full ballerina skirt and a hint of saloon and I’m on board!” Well, not so much ballerina, but there’s a whole lotta tulle going on under there and I love it.

Only thing I’d change is I’d do something a bit less ‘meh’ with her hair. I wouldn’t crucify an up do, or anything. Maybe a side-swept chignon?

TA DAHHHH, the best dressed goes to…

Anne Hathaway

There is literally NOTHING wrong here. Dress? FAB. Colour? A twist on the nude, but still on trend. FAB. Hair? FAB. Anne, as a person? FAB. Just gorgeous.

I am 100% jealous of her figure, and particularly her back – not a roll in sight! I’m strangely proud of Anne for this. I’m not her Ma, by the way.

Hope you liked my Globes round-up, I realise I didn’t mention who won what, but like, the Daily Mail can tell ya that!

Do comment with your thoughts. xx

For me Emma Stone was the most elegant and unique there. She really suits the blonde I think!

She was really elegant, yeah. What a figure too! I just have a mini obsession with red heads, and I thought her red hair was much more unique and natural than yet another blondie, ya know? :) x

Olivia Wilde was Mischa Barton’s bad ass lesbian lover in The O.C I think! She’s also in some movie that i saw a trailer for in the cinema over the weekend..can’t remember what it is though

love the awards too cant wait until the oscars.now i used to dream of going one day but i would need a miracle to get there now but im thinking you might be my only chance of ever going when you write that great book that gets made into a big hollywood movie so i want you to promise me that you will take me and i will even let you pick my dress.

Since you were the first to ask, when I write my bestseller and they make it a movie and I get invited to the Oscars, I’m DEFINITELY bringing you. And we’ll let Marchesa send us 50 dresses to choose from too. It’ll be great fun. :)

Jesus Michelle Williams dress was bad. Defo one of the worst dressed, as was JLo, what was that shawl/cape about? Mandy Moore was just bleh, no opinion. Christina should have made it into worst dressed though – she looked shocking! Does she not have a stylist?
I thought the Glee girls looked nice, bit wierd that they all went in pink, and considering they have to stand beside each other for 8 million photos, probably not the best move, but nude is still v. on trend. Loved the skirt on Diana’s guna, and the colour, not too crazy on the cut of the top of it. Naya looked gorgeous but wasnt crazy on the cut or the flower detail…there was enough attention on her new boob job as it was!
LOVED Anne Hathaways dress, gorgeous! And Im a major major fan of Angelina and Scarlet’s dresses, love the shade of green and the style of that dress, so elegant and vintage looking – I just dont like Angelina so she kinda ruined it for me a bit. Really liked Scarlet’s too, kinda vintagey too, pity about her scowl face ruining it, the mousey brown hair, pale skin and that shade washed her out, would have been way nicer with her blonde hair and a birra sun shimmer or something, BUT, she’s a ride and still pulled it off in my opinion.

Love your award season posts Smash! Yno I love a gander at an aul guna :) xx

Anne definitely stole the show! X

Glad someone else agrees with me that Catherine ZJ’s dress looks like grass…

WHAT was Halle Berry thinking? I mean, really? REALLY? What like?

    xx

    • Aisling January 18, 2011 at 23:23 #

It looks a LOT like grass. Or I read somewhere that it looked like someone had skinned Oscar the grouch… very good analogy :) xx

Anyone else notice that Christina Aguilera seemed to have been channeling her perfume bottle? The shape, the colour, the lace… just the dress in general…

    • Aisling January 20, 2011 at 21:55 #

I KNEW I’d seen that whole look somewhere before. Kudos for recognising the similarities!! :)
