Sarah Hope Smith: LAST CHANCE!

1 Oct

Ahhhh… Friday at 4pm.

Such a joyous time for so many 9-5ers. Fairly mundane if you’re unemployed and spend your week blogging and watching re-runs of Keeping Up With The Kardashians… but whatever. Read!

So, you’ve had all week to read up on how to work your various make-up looks, Sarah Hope has answered your burning make-up questions (not literally burning, obvs. If anything burns, seek medical advice) and you’ve commented in your millions tens to win the competition.

Here’s a little interview to find out more about the woman herself (that’s her there, working her magic) and one of you lucky people will meet her and have a make-up consultation. I’ll post the winner’s name later this evening.

What got you into make up?

After years of experimenting with make-up I thought it was time to finally do something about it. I knew this is what I wanted to do for a long time. It was anything and everything that got me into make-up, advertisements, tutorials on the television growing up, gory movies, magazines…every time I came across any of these I wanted to do this as a career more and more.

Where’d you study/what did you study?

I graduated with a diploma in make-up artistry from LA Make-Up Academy. The experience was like no other. I’m covered in every field like special effects, TV and film, bridal etc. I’ve loved every second of my training.

What is your favourite field of make-up?

I adore special effects and body art. I think it’s amazing. Anything that can make you actually forget that it’s all just make-up in horror movies I find fascinating. The special effects are so amazing. I love body art too, the pink wings were my favourite look to complete.

How long have you been obsessed with make up and beauty?

My mam said when I was really young I used to apply her lipstick all over my face and say “I want to be like mammy” that’s when it all started.

What looks are your personal faves for wearing yourself?

I love a purple smokey eye, it always makes my green eyes pop. I also love to channel my inner Marilyn Monroe by wearing a lovely 1950s winged liner and a sultry red lip.

Who are your fashion icons/make-up icons?

Alexander Mc Queen always went for daring make-up looks on the catwalk. I also love Alex Box and Kevin Au Coin. Au Coin was the first really successful self taught make-up artist. He said there are no rules in make-up, which is so true. However I’m guessing he’d cringe at my lipstick fiasco back when I was a toddler.

What advice would you have for people looking to start a career in makeup?

Don’t be afraid to go for it. And know that everyone has their own individual techniques, they may not be for everyone but try them out and you’ll be surprised in what you learn about your own methods.

What questions about makeup are you most asked?

I always get asked about my favourite brand of product and which product I find best. I think every brand has something different to offer. There will never be a brand that has products which are all amazing. I personally love MAC, they have so many products to work with. Having said that, I can’t work with any of their mascaras. And my favourite product differs day-to-day as I always tend to try something new so I can pass on my recommendations.

What is your ULTIMATE top tip?

My top tip is something that every person can use, no matter what their style. The best way to work any make-up look is confidence. You’ll be amazed at how many head you’ll turn if your own head is held high and you feel great in your own skin.
